Soul Boys of the Western World review

As most of you know, the UK premiere for the all new Spandau Ballet documentary "Soul Boys of the Western World" premiered in cinemas all across the country last Tuesday, with a special live performance following that. When I was sitting watching the film with my friend, I was very surprised that there was only roughly 20 people dotted around the cinema, not many at all! I guess Yorkshire isn't home to, if any, Spandau fans. It took forever to come on, and when it did, first impressions did last! The opening part where each member discussed how they took interest to music, where they grew up in the Swingin' Sixties was really good. They were all quite cute as little boys, especially Steve Norman, where my friend was literally drooling! I liked where they all had a chance to speak, their own personal opinion about the band. The best bit, in my eye, was when they were discussing the making of the True album in the Bahamas. Definitely plenty of eye candy there, ladies! I noticed that their fan base had a higher proportion of women. Maybe because there's (at the time), five good looking men on stage, flaunting themselves in skin tight leather and luxury Anthony Price suits. Towards the middle of the film, when it flashes back to 1979 when Gary says "We don't want to lose each other" - who could possibly think he was foreshadowing the band's demise! This is the first time I've heard this - but Gary Kemp? A bully? I can't believe he picked on Tony Hadley like he did! But take it from personal experience, not everyone gets on with him. Enjoyed the bit about The Krays and Spandau living their separate lives in the 1990s, but when it got to the court case in 1999, from what I've read in "I Know This Much", it was a very stressful period in the band's history. Ten years later when they reformed, I breath a huge sigh of relief. I haven't even discovered Spandau Ballet yet (I was 10 in 2009) but a band as good as this by certain needs an excellent comeback and oh boy they sure did! What a fantastic film and a cracking good way to end it!

I was very disappointed that they only got the chance to answer only 3 questions, it would have been better if they could have answered more.

I think the highlight of the whole night was the actual live performance at the end. TCALSS and Chant No.1 have been given a brand new, upbeat, 21st century punk sound - it was great!! It sounded just as good as the original eighties version! True and Only When You Leave were good as well!! I wish I was there in front of them!

Overall, it was a really good night and I highly recommend the film to new and old Spandau Ballet fans. 5/5!!!

Spandau Ballet...here I come!

Hi

As most of you know the new Spandau Ballet documentary film Soul Boys of the Western World is coming to cinemas in a couple of weeks time, followed by a live performance. That's only if you're going to see it at the Royal Albert Hall in London. However, it's being played at cinemas dotted all over the country, and the live gig is being broadcasted via live stream.

As a reward for getting a B in English last year, my dad's booked me tickets to go and see them at my local cinema on the night. You don't know how excited I am! I'll be reporting back on the day to say how it went. If I can, I might take some cheeky little pictures of the screen!

Well, being the techie that I am, I've set a reminder on my calendar. Hope nothing comes up at the last minute as I'd be very sad to miss it, and you can't get a refund on the tickets!

I'll post later.

UPDATE: Spandau Ballet's New Album

Hello

I don't know if any of you can remember my last post where I shared the news that Spandau Ballet are finally back in the studios producing a brand new album ready for release later on in the year. It turns out that it's not a completely new album, it's got their greatest hits, some bonus features, remastered supposedly to the best quality. However, there are THREE new tracks on this album. One of those new tracks was called 'This Is The Love' and it was broadcasted for the first time on BBC Radio 2 this morning. From discussions on Spandau forums I've heard it's good and they've got their mojo back, if that's how you word it! I've yet to hear it myself and I'll report back what I thought of it.

As most of you know SB Official released the new cover artwork for this album, which will be entitled 'The Story'. If you haven't seen it, take a look!

Do you have high expectations for this album?

Spandau Ballet's New Album?

So, is this the news that we have finally been waiting for?
A long time ago a lot of you said that it would be great if Spandau Ballet could get back together again and produce some new material, an album, and even potentially go on tour.
After seeing what I believe to be spoiler posts on Twitter from their official handle, this seems to be the case! Have you seen the tweets from each band member saying they've been in the studio recording their individual part? Doesn't this set your alarm bells ringing? SPANDAU BALLET IS RECORDING A NEW ALBUM!

I wasn't really bothered about Once More so I hope this new one is better. Knowing SB's intense worldwide fan base, it's bound to be a smash! And if it sells well, hell yeah they'll have a sell out tour! I'm just praying that they come to Sheffield O2 Arena like they did in 2009! If I go, this will be the first ever gig I've ever been to (yeah, I know, I'm like the saddest person in the world!).

Fingers crossed!

Happy Birthday, John

On the 6th of July, 1959, the future drummer of what was to become the heartbeat of one of the world's biggest groups in the New Romantics Movement was born. John Keeble was his name, and drumming is his game! Below is a photo of him with The Who's guitarist Pete Townshend.

Let's see if we can get more than 55 (his age now) pageviews for his birthday!
Happy Birthday from me and every Spandau fan!

I know some of you Spandau guys and girls might have already seen this totally cool pic a few million times but this photo means a lot to me. When I first got into Spandau Ballet three years ago, this was the first photo I ever saw. First impressions were good...obviously!!

The Meme Idea

Most Facebook pages tend to often to post witty messages in the form of a "meme". These consist of a person with a funny expression and a funny punch line. So I said to myself;
"Why don't I make one for the page?"
So I went ahead, but I got stuck on finding a photo of an individual band member with a funny looking expression on their face. I eventually decided on a still of JK, smiling (no surprises there). Here's some ideas I made.

If you like them, you could suggest an idea for the next one I make!

#TBT

People have always asked me;
"If you know so much about Spandau Ballet, how come you don't know when their first gig was?".
I'm not a super genius, but it was quite easy to look it up, and it was at club Blitz, London, in December 1979!

Makes a perfect throwback, don't ya think? It's nice to look back at the past times and remember how good they were!

Now, I just love this pic, true Soul Boys! I just love their facial expressions, their clothes make them so cool and serious!

Martin vs. Gary, who's the better looking one?

A lot of people have asked me which one I think is the best looking Kemp brother. I fall down and hit a brick wall at that one, because I simply don't know which one to choose! I like both! But...

Martin always knows when and where to dress classy, Soho being the place!
Gary has a huge select circle of friends, including Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran and Roger Taylor of Queen.

Martin had a mullet in the 1980's and suited it very well. You could say he was keeping up with the times.

Gary made an exceptional backing vocalist. Have you heard his famous parts on Chant No 1 and Instinction?

Martin: bass god!

So there are my opinions of why I love the Kemp brothers! Why do you like them? Submit an answer via the comment box on the Bloglovin post on the page!

The results from the poll are in!

And if I can have a drum roll please...the winner is...

Grey!

I knew everyone would go for his rather natural look. They say natural is better than synthetic!

What suits Martin better?

As we all know, Martin Kemp has sported a lot of different hairstyles and colours. But which one do you think suits him the most? T'other day I saw in the paper a photo of him with grey hair, and a confession that he'd been dying it for a number of years. In my opinion, and quoted by Lisa Simpson, going grey is really empowering. It allowed him to age with confidence and still look great. However in the respected opinions of others, this is not the case. So I decided to have a little poll. What hair colour suits MJK the best?

Grey?

Or brown?

The decision is yours!

I've posted the two images on my Spandau Ballet fan page Soul Boys of the Western World and so far grey is winning. Can we outsmart it with brown?

The link to the poll is below. Anyone can vote, as long as you're a Spandau Ballet fan!

The winning photo will be made into a special timeline cover for the page and a special header for Twitter.

Good luck, MJK's hair!

Happy Birthday, Steve!

I can't believe it's Steve's birthday today! Doesn't look bad for a man in his mid fifties, does he? Here's two images to compare! Do you think he's aged well?

Happy Birthday Steve! 54 kisses!

Xxxxxxxxxx
(actually I didn't have time to do 54, but here's nine to represent every six years)

SB - St Tropez - 1981

Is There Plans for a new SB tour?

Hi everyone!!

You'll never guess what I've just read on twitter. It seems I've had a significant amount of retweets on a specific reply to Gary. He mentioned Martin and said something about his new hairstyle ruining the lighting plans for the band's ‘new tour’. My heart started to beat hard an fast. Was this finally a breakthrough we have waited 5 long years for? Or was it just general nonsense? I have yet to receive a reply from the brothers. Fingers crossed that this time in summer I'll being seeing them perform!

Updates: 11-02-14

Hi everybody!

It's been a long time and no see, so here I am, once more, won't you give me one more time? (geddit).
Over the last couple of weeks I've seen some rather significant changes in and around my Spandau Ballet fan page. Since the start of the new year we've seen some more public interest, especially on Twitter. Martin Kemp is now following us. I guess he just fell for my pleadings!

[sexy eh?]

Thanks for being an awesome audience!

Gig Review: Live Aid 1985

As we all know, Live Aid was one of the most honorable concerts of the 1980's, and indeed, the 20th Century. Obviously Queen stole the show with a striking performance of all the crowd's favourite tracks, and Freddie's prancing around the stage made a lot of ladies squeal with delight and passion. U2 was exceptionally awesome, and David Bowie did a damn good job of presenting everything. People don't seem to realise that most bands around at the time made Live Aid what it was, and it's quite sad when you come to think of it. I was watching the concert with my dad a bit ago after getting it on DVD, and he said "You do know Spandau Ballet performed there, don't you?". I sat down and watched it. I didn't expect it to be quite so awesome!

I loved their choice of songs tailored for their time slot, at present, their performance of Only When You Leave at this venue, is one of the best live versions of the song I've heard so far. I'll give the band their due, it's a sweltering hot day in July, no one was gonna dress up formally to perform a couple of songs for a worldwide audience, but Spandau Ballet was prepared to make this effort and still wow the crowd. Breaking the sweat, slapping the bass, fingers cracking on the tenor sax, it was all gold and music to my ears.

I've always wondered why they didn't do Gold to top it all off. True is a lovely song in all of it's respects, but once you've listened to it a few times it does, to be honest, become a little bittersweet. I know this much though, and it is TRUE, I loved watching the performance. So much so, I watched it over and over again for about an hour before I could describe what the weather was like, what the band was wearing, and what make of instruments they were playing.  A truly great effort. Well done guys. Just for this, 4/5.

Concert Review: O2 (2009)

Live at the O2 was the head start for Spandau Ballet's Reformation tour. It had been the first one they'd done since breaking up in 1989, and failing miserably to sue each other in court ten years before. Tickets sold out very swiftly, and thousands of once die hard fans flocked to the venue to see their favourite band take to the stage once more. The comeback had been announced on Daybreak (then GMTV) a couple of months prior to the day, and they were glad to be back. Once More was released later that year.

Being a Spandau Ballet fan myself, this was the first concert I'd ever watched. At the actual time of the concert taking place, I would have only been ten years old, and there was no way my parents would have forked out for it. I got a very positive first impression of what they were like on stage when I watched it last year, and since then purchased it on DVD so I would be able to watch it whenever I desire. They had certainly chosen the right venue to hold the event alright; the place was completely and utterly packed! In some respects I felt sorry for those who were at the front; the poor souls had no seats! But, they were quite lucky to be so close in the first place. They probably were the ones who jumped as soon as SB announced they were touring and the kick off concert would be at the O2 in London. the city where all five originated from.

The kick off was just amazing, but I still think to this day they should have kicked off with Gold rather that To Cut A Long Story Short, as Gold, being a massive hit in the 1980's, made the band what they are today. I've always liked TCASS because although it was on the first album [Journeys to Glory], the tune is quite catchy and I know all the lyrics off by heart. In fact, I liked the order in which their classics, and some songs I'd never even heard before were played. Keeping my eye on the crowd though, they were quite enthusiastic and had their hands in the air, dancing, laughing and having a great time. Halfway through though they seemed to be like swaying plasticine figures, wanting them to get on with it. I've seen major rock bands like The Rolling Stones and The Who perform live, and SB performed at a more steady pace, where for me, was alright, because I could enjoy all the songs at the duration they were meant to be at.

I didn't really like the layout the band were at on stage. John was suspended on a higher platform above the rest. I don't know if that was to show his face, to show his 'godly' status or something else. But still, he played a crucial part, banging those drums to extreme extent, making the music unique.

Overall, I enjoyed the concert all the way through. It just proves that after not being around for 20 years, they can still bounce back with a vengeance and still just be as awesome as they were in the eighties. 5 out of 5, definitely.

Thanks for reading, I really appreciate it.
